The leg press is a compound powerlift that engages most of the muscle groups in the legs. The safest and most effective form of the exercise requires a seated bench with apparatus, but in the past, weight trainers lifted a weighted barbell with their feet while lying on their backs. Using precise form, the leg press works all four major muscle segments in the lower body, but variations in weight and reps will determine to what degree each segment is worked during the exercise.
